Sediment barriers are used primarily as temporary structures to slow storm water runoff into streams, filter sediment, and promote storm water infiltration. Barriers are used in agriculture, construction, restoration, and storm water management. The type of sediment barrier used will depend on objective, coarseness of sediment, drainage area, and water velocities. Silt fences are efficient in areas with low to medium sheet flow velocities, excelsior logs and wattles can slow more concentrated flows, and other structures like berms are used in areas with higher concentrated flow velocities. Sediment barriers are also used for perimeter protection. Our silt fence has even been featured on the television show “Cops” check out the picture in the slideshow.
